We’re proud to welcome Michael Premo as our Campaign Manager to lead the statewide effort to move marriage forward in Ohio! Check out Michael’s interview to learn more about him and why he’s so excited to lead the charge for marriage equality in the Buckeye State!
1. Tell us about your role as campaign manager?
I’m responsible for managing our outstanding team of to ensure that all marriages in Ohio are respected. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the campaign (making sure the lights stay on), I’m working to hone and deliver our message in the press, raise the money we need, and give our organizers all the support they need as they educate the people of Ohio of the importance of allowing all loving and committed couples the freedom to marry.
2. Why is winning the freedom to marry for all Ohio families so important to you?
Because I have friends both here and in other states who are currently being denied the right to marry the person they love. They’ve been in loving and committed relationships – in some cases for decades – and have even raised children together, but they’re being told their relationship doesn’t deserve legal recognition and protection. That’s wrong. When we win marriage equality in Ohio, we not only will help thousands of Ohioans, we will add to the tremendous momentum in the fight for equality across the country.
3. How will this campaign grow public support and help move marriage forward across the state?
We’re building public support by having one-on-one conversations with people across the state who don’t currently support marriage equality, and help them to change their minds. We’re getting couples to tell their stories about how the current law hurts them and their families. With a strong coalition of national and state LGBT organizations and our allies, we are building a smart, transparent campaign to convince Ohioans that all loving and committed couples deserve marriage equality. And we’re going to win.
4. What is the most important thing pro-marriage Ohioans can do to show their support?
Talk to your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors about marriage equality, and why you support it. Talk to them about why you believe everyone should have the right to marry the person they love, and why all families deserve equality. That’s how we win.
5. Tell us a little bit about you… where do you live, what do you do in your free time?
I started working on campaigns in 2000, and I have worked on campaigns at the federal, state and local level ever since. I am proud to have been part of winning marriage equality in New Jersey, and I’m excited to be part of the fight here in Ohio. I live with my wife Elizabeth and our 3 year old daughter Ella. Between working for marriage equality at work and chasing after a 3 year old at home, I don’t have much free time, so I’m grateful for quality time with my family and the nights when my wife and I can stay awake long enough to watch a movie.
